![]() Add a GPU or for more storage add a cheap NVME card for $15 and slot in 4x NVME SSDs! Not bad for a 11yr old machine. Even TB2 is fast and now-a-days external PCIE expansion can be had for under $100. Then the BEST part is the Thunderbolt port. Share it through like 3 clicks in Sharing settings via SMB or download additional software for ZFS. So you can buy cheap 3.5" enclosures and get up to 4x 16TB and add 64TB of external RAID storage for waaaaay cheaper than any NAS. ![]() Stick any number of hard drives into the 4 USB ports and the Mini can RAID them together (striped/mirrored/concat) with Disk Utility. Literally only sucks up about 12w at idle. Runs Jellyfin just fine in a docker container in MacOS, although if you have h265 files, then I would suggest a newer Mini like a 2018 or M1/M2. In fact I have a 2012 i7 that I crammed in a 4TB hard drive and 1TB MSATA that I combined into a Fusion drive. The Mac Mini is the perfect computer for what you want to do. Plug in HDD/USB/flash drive - instant shared drive - alas no security (Login into router and turn support Media on) Your family will likely to use WiFi not LANĪll modern routers support USB connection. NAS and overall access depend on your Wifi usually slow faster on LAN but even on 10Gig Ethernet internal Mini Speeds will be 2.8 faster. If you get 2TB SSD Mini you will need 4TB HDD for Time Machine. Other testers found TB3 to write/read at 1,400 Mbytes/s - no bidirectional SSDs and enclosures I have 2 Samsung T7 for 1st 20GB Cache at USB 3.1 Gen 2 then at T5 speeds USB3.1 Gen 1 writes about 350 Mbytes /s Samsung T5 M1 Mini internal SSD writes 2,800 MBytes/s Mac Os has feature/bug on M1s it read/writes at about 70%-80% of UBS3.x Max speed same for TB3/4 ![]() i just dont want to be looking for another Mac Mini anytime soon. Is this config really an overkill? if yes, what is a good configuration that will last me 5-7 years without any performance degradation. should I wait for M2 or just pull the trigger on this config M2 mac mini is just around the corner (current rumors put it at March 2023). I plan to use Synology NAS and possibly an external SSD hooked to mini to enhance the storage because I currently have more data than 2TB. I decided to go with Mac Mini (M1, 16Gb RAM, 2 TB SSD, 10Gig Ethernet) Which I know seems to be an overkill right now but I am hoping to future proof it by making it as muscular as possible. The usage for this headless server will be Plex, Multimedia content for the house, File Server (photos, documents etc), and whatever else family needs. I have an apple household and I have been considering Mac Mini M1 as a headless server. Hello, First time poster so apologies if I am doing it wrong. ![]()
